Frozen Flame Review (2026) – Is This Open-World Survival RPG Still Worth Playing?

Frozen Flame Review – Is This Open-World Survival RPG Still Worth Playing? (2026)

First Impressions

So this game has been in my backlog for a while. Everyone knows that I like open-world, base-building, and exploration kinds of games. So, survival, sandbox, and crafting games—your basic Minecraft, Ark, Palworld kind of games. I guess those were the ones I could think of off the top of my head. I mean, there are others like The Forest, Scrap Mechanic, Satisfactory, and Valheim. I could go on for a while. I just like those styles of games and have played many of them.

If you enjoy survival crafting games with exploration and building mechanics, Frozen Flame definitely fits into that category.

Thanks to the Developers

So let me get to the point: thanks for the key, devs!

I got this game through a program called Terminals.io. I was actually assigned the game like three years ago... but I forgot Terminals existed, so it was sitting in my accepted folder...

I'm so sorry...

What Is Frozen Flame?

The game Frozen Flame came out on November 17, 2022. In a world that is dying, you must survive in the world of dragons through harsh conditions while cleansing the realm for the greater good.

It was developed by Dreamside Interactive and published by Ravenage Games and 2P Games.

Sadly, it looks like the last update made by the developers was over three years ago, which sucks because it looks like the game won a few NYX Awards in 2022. It might be another Early Access game that's been left in the graveyard of unfinished games.

That doesn't mean we still can't enjoy it.

Right now, it's on sale until July 9, 2026, during the Steam Summer Sale. So instead of paying $19.99, you're snagging it for $14.99.

Character Creation & Getting Started

You start off as a skeleton after what feels like your death. It's almost like you were sent to another plane and have to survive another life after death.

You learn the basic skills first, which, personally, I think have a clunky delay between pushing the button and the action actually happening. I also just might be too aggressive and not patient enough.

After learning the basics, that's when you get to make your character. There isn't a huge selection of customization options, so making my character didn't take me too long.

Crafting, Survival & Progression

Like every survival game, I think I become over-encumbered pretty quickly because I have a bad habit of picking up everything I see lying on the ground.

Like most games, you'll want to make an axe, level up, and then make a pickaxe.

I found that you learn new blueprints through random things you do, quests, and by buying them in random shops. It took me forever to figure out how to make a cooking station so I could cook two items together.

I'm not telling you where to find that.

You'll have to figure it out for yourself...

Unless you ask nicely in the comments. XD

Rituals & Leveling

Now, one cute thing I liked about this game was the little mini-games called Rituals that give you extra XP throughout the map.

Sometimes you have to kill enemies, sometimes activate rune stones, or even catch a certain amount of fish. It was a great way to earn some extra XP and help boost your progress.

Now, leveling up is a little different. You don't just have a level-up menu. Instead, you have to level up at these rock formation things. I think they were called Citadels or something—I can't remember.

The great thing is that you can craft them later, so it wasn't too terrible.

Base Building

Now, finding a spot to build was a bit awful. There didn't seem to be a lot of open spaces.

I ended up finding this farm-type area and just built a little bit upward. It wasn't too far away from a teleportation circle either. I ended up finding three of those in the starting area, which made getting around much easier.

Combat & Exploration

I haven't managed to fight all the bosses to open the portal yet, but I feel like I'm almost there.

I like to switch between using a staff and a sword because it gives me both close-range and long-range combat options.

I wish I could figure out how to make potions. I can make food, but I've only managed to find potions in random chests.

Some monsters drop loot, crafting materials, food, and other useful items.

Then there's one little guy who honestly looks like you just put him on your head and now you can suddenly see better.

It's weird.

My Thoughts So Far

I'm really enjoying exploring this game.

I plan to keep playing it and updating this post as I go. The problem is, I have a bad habit of being a game hopper, so it might take me a while.

Now, the reviews for this game are mixed. A lot of the negative reviews seem to come purely from the fact that the game appears to have been abandoned.

I also read in the comments that there was some kind of legal dispute between the developers and the publishers. I don't know the full story, so take that with a grain of salt, but I really hope it eventually gets resolved.

Even if it never gets another update, I'm still having fun with Frozen Flame. If you're into open-world survival, crafting, exploration, and base-building games, I think it's still worth taking a look—especially while it's on sale.
