Voxile Review: A Voxel-Based Wild Ride Through a Mutated World

Setting the Scene: A World Built in Voxels and Mutations

When looking for crafting and building games on Steam, you might miss this voxel adventure game. Voxile is a quest, craft, loot, build, destroy, and shoot. Where you try to shoot something and accidentally destroy it, but we'll talk about that later. In this Voxile game review, you will learn about this post-apocalyptic voxel game. You might be wondering what a voxel is. Well, as you know, there are pixelated games, which are 2D. A voxel is the 3D version. So think of it along the lines of indie games like Minecraft.

Voxile was published and developed by VoxRay Games, Inc. The game was released on March 10th of this year.

Loot, Build, Repeat: Progression in Voxile

When I came into this open-world voxel shooter, it wasn't what I expected. I was thinking it was going to be some kind of sandbox crafting game. I ended up clicking the campaign, and that is where everything was changed.

You start off with confusion as your memories start flooding back. Everyone is gone, more than likely dead. But a man helped you, the man Decker, through a portal to where you lay. Alone and confused. That is, until the old man starts yelling at you about all the things you have to do. Pretty much the world, towns, places have all been infested by well, an infestation. These include monsters like slimes, bigger slimes, different colored slimes, birds, skeletons, and other things.

As you progress through the level, you'll get various tools and items. You'll also learn how to craft certain things. There are random melee weapons, as well as a wide range of guns. You'll have to watch your use of them as they do have durability. So buying or finding a repair kit will help. Now you can find coins or sell things to vendors to get more coins. Each world will have its own vendors, if they have them. There are other tools aside from the weapon items, like a jackhammer, that let you harvest any voxel as long as it's strong enough, as there are upgrades. A hammer will repair sections that look broken, like if you find half a hammer, boom, it's fixed. Of course, you do need to have wood on you.

Now there is a wide range of quests to do, lots of side quests that will help you with your main quest. I ended up leaving some of the worlds without some of them being done. Speaking of leaving the world, if you die, you are brought back to the last lantern you lit up. Pretty much a shiny crystal on a stick. Once you complete the main quest, you go on to "a whole new world, a dazzling place I never knew."  The first time confused me completely. My inventory was gone, my levels were gone, and I had just seen it said I leveled up as I left the last world. So I was there in a new place, confused and mad. Decker didn't help much. I realized it was some weird rougelite version. Each world that you pass, you get to add a level to your character on the main screen. It is a smaller percentage boost compared to the levels you gain in a world, but it's a permanent boost between worlds.

Of course, since this is a voxel survival game, there is eating, of course. I'm not sure what happens if you don't eat as I would eat when it complain. But it also seemed to me like the food didn't really help health that I could see, as you had the option of health packs.

Final Verdict: Should You Play Voxile?

I have not yet played the other modes yet, there is a multiplayer mode and a try other worlds option. In the other worlds option, you can actually play user-made worlds and randomly generated worlds. I liked the game once I knew what I was getting myself into. Like I mentioned before, I thought it was going to be a sandbox game, not an adventure game. One thing that did drive me crazy was that I would get a bunch of things in my inventory, they would say they have value, but I never found a place to actually sell them. All the vendors would only buy what they sold. It did catch me off guard as I progressed from level to level that all my things were gone. But I got prepared that it was going to happen the next time. Sometimes with new items, sometimes with no items. I would suggest this game if you like little adventures.

Steam users have a different opinion on the game; 48% of reviews are positive, leaving the status of the game as mixed. One even pointed out that the game used to be called Voxlands before a name change, which was because of a trademark issue. One of the positive games pointed out that a lot of the negative reviews are pointing to this game, supposing it to be like Minecraft in their own minds, and it isn't, so they are mad. In this day and age, it's easier to just go a watch some gameplay for a bit without watching too much to ruin the story to see if it's something that you would want to play.

I personally am going to finish the game myself. I have come across one bug, a quest that just won't finish, but sometimes things like that happen. You guys should know by now I am pretty laid back. Now the game is $24.99. I'm not sure about that price. I would have priced it lower, so I would wait to see if there is a sale, if it's something you are interested in.

It's like survival basic. It seems like, I think a lot of devs just throw survival in if there is a hunger meter. We want lost in the middle of no where survival.

I do think a lot of games are like that just to throw that keyword in there.
